School Board Meeting Highlights - May 11, 2021

DELAND – The Volusia County School Board on Tuesday took the next steps toward making face-coverings optional and voluntary at schools and other Volusia County Schools facilities.

The board voted to advertise the proposed change in policy, as it is legally required to do, and is expected to vote on the amended policy at a special meeting on June 14 at 6 p.m. If approved, the revised policy to make masks and shields optional would take effect immediately.

The current mandatory face-covering policy for student, employees, and visitors will remain in effect until then.

VCS will continue to closely monitor the course of the virus.

Also Tuesday, the School Board:

  • Approved the appointment of Dr. Andrew Olson as Director of Middle Schools. Olson previously served as a principal and assistant principal in middle schools in Hillsborough County.
  • Approved the appointment of Adrian Bronson as Principal of South Daytona Elementary School. Bronson is currently the principal of Cypress Creek Elementary.
  • Recognized the month of May as Military Appreciation Month and National Physical Fitness and Sports Month. Enjoy this video of Deltona Lakes Elementary students participating in "Eagle Sensory and Physical Fitness" during P.E.:
